Giving Yourself Permission to Slow Down Through Seasons of Change

An October reflection from Growing Well Clinical Therapy

The air is changing, the days are getting shorter, and the holiday season is approaching. As we reach for warmer clothes and adjust our routines, we can also pause to ask: What do I need in this season of my life?

Change can bring excitement, uncertainty, relief, and sadness—sometimes all at once. You may be welcoming a new beginning while grieving something that has ended. You may feel proud of your growth and still miss what once felt familiar. These feelings can exist together.

Give yourself time to adjust

We often expect ourselves to move through change without missing a beat. Work continues, family needs remain, and responsibilities keep coming. But adjusting takes energy. You do not have to have everything figured out simply because a new season has begun.

Slowing down might mean leaving an evening unscheduled, asking for help, or reconsidering a commitment that no longer fits. Rest can be part of how you move forward.

Make room for your own holiday experience

The holidays can carry expectations about togetherness, spending, traditions, and happiness. Yet your experience may include grief, financial pressure, complicated relationships, or a desire for quiet.

You are allowed to approach this holiday season differently. A tradition can change. A gathering can be shorter. A budget can have limits. You can enjoy moments of connection while also acknowledging what feels difficult.

Before saying yes, consider: Do I have the time, energy, and resources for this? What would make participation feel manageable?

Notice what deserves to come with you

As the year moves toward its close, take a moment to reflect:

  • What has supported me through recent changes?

  • What am I holding onto out of guilt or habit?

  • Where do I need more rest, support, or clearer boundaries?

  • What would a gentler season look like for me?

You do not need to reinvent your life this October. Begin with one choice that honors your current needs.

At Growing Well Clinical Therapy, we offer space to explore change, process loss, and build ways of coping that fit your life. Wherever this season finds you, you deserve care as you adjust.
